Cartoons with agendas

Both the female and male red-bellied woodpeckers are regular visitors now
Oriole drank out of the hummingbird feeder while the grackle looked on
later he tried the seed cake which has some dried fruit in it. The female showed up for the first time this year but took off before we could take a photo of it

A much as I hate  blackbirds, I do like these tiles. I have them in the center of my fireplace mantel
dove all puffed up

While watching Daniel and Tessa the other day, I was only half paying attention to a cartoon they were watching with the following dialog:

How would you like to get some equity?
What's equity?
Another word for being rich.
Yep, let's get us some of that equity. How do we do that?
Well we can buy an apartment building.
How do we do that? We have no money.
The bank will give us some money.

So the characters do that. Problems arise. The tenants are whiners wanting this and that fixed. Then they discover that the apartment building has rent control so they need to devise a strategy to oust the tenants to get new ones at higher rents.

Huh? The kids weren't really paying attention but this seemed to be a different plot than the ones I watched while a kid with Ranger Rick trying to stop Yogi Bear from stealing those picnic baskets. And Wile E. Coyote continually being outsmarted by the Roadrunner.

I looked over Oliver's 2nd grade vocabulary list which included 'viscous' and 'translucent'. Yes he knew what they meant.

It has been cool and rainy for the past few days. I should be doing yard work but I am lazy. I did get my nails painted and have been running regularly. I thought the Cooper's hawk nest was deserted but finally saw the mother fly in. When she is inside the nest, all I can see is her tail feathers.

Maya decided to test us last night by running all over the place refusing to listen when it was time for her to go to bed. Steve glared at me.
So again, why do we have her?

Yes she is a challenge and so far behind. This morning she was back to being sweet and co-operative.

Mother's Day 2016

Maya's father's new dog. Only 8 weeks old. As it is half mastiff, it will be massive
teeter totter buddies
Brunch buddy
Chicken n' waffles, yum.
Mrs. Rose-breasted grosbeak paid us a visit. So much plainer than her flamboyant mate
She visited later

Mother's Day flowers
He rules this tree chasing off much bigger finches. Bought him another feeder for when his friends show up. One may already be here I am amazed how tiny he is

Mother's Day tile. This tile covers all the colors in my living room

Mother's Day orchid

So this was my Mother's Day. Josh and Allie came before 8 am to pick us up. I assured him Ann Arbor would be empty at that hour. We'd be able to park anywhere we wanted..NOT! Are they all going to our brunch place? Nope. There was a running race a block over. After our tasty brunch in the trendy restaurant (there was a drink on the menu featuring cigar smoke as an ingredient) we went to a park by the river that has a short nature trail through the woods. Three deer were there to greet us that missed the 2016 deer slaughter. The city had a much protested program to hire sharp shooters to kill 160 deer in the city's parks which were closed for the winter. Many of the deer live on University property (a good third of the city) so they couldn't be touched. As we had much less snow than usual, the sharp shooters were unable to track the deer easily so fell  100 short of their quota. And no snow cover meant the deer could eat all winter so we have even more than we had before the deer cull. Still Allie was thrilled to see them close up.

Off for a bike ride, later than I would have normally but I wouldn't miss brunch, in my new purple cycling gloves (Josh had noticed how ratty my old ones were). Extra bonus: more tail winds than headwinds due to my timing. Just as I finished up my shower, Shanna's family came. A beautiful day for the grandkids to play outside. Tessa was surprised to learn that my name is Sue as she assumed it was just Grandma. Just before dinner, Maya and Naomi showed up. I shared Maya with a friend who came over for wine on the porch. We watched the birds and the setting sun until it was too cold.

So I got to see my babies and grandbabies all in the same day. I am blessed.

Grosbeak duo

A pensive Tess

There's a smile
Daniel amused by something on the computer. I did have him play outside a while
Did I need more dishes? I haven't bought any in 22 years. These looked cool
Beachy scene for my beachy bathroom. This set me back $3
pot of wire tulips
every doorway needs a pediment
These deer didn't mind me biking by them. Earlier in the day, I ran by a different herd of deer
Doesn't it look like he has a big heart on his chest? He also has patches of red under his wings but photos in flight are hard
Now I have 2 male grosbeaks and 2 male orioles. No females

A sad day in birdland: a beautiful male goldfinch broke his neck flying into my windows. Surprisingly this doesn't happen more often.

It was a beautiful day and not windy like the day before. I should have done my long ride today, not yesterday though I did bike some. My bike ride is in 9 weeks though the mileage isn't as far as last year's ride and the hills should be tamer.

Earlier in the week, Steve and I spit in a tube and mailed it off to get our DNA tested. Should be interesting, particularly mine. There is a quarter of me that isn't known: Jewish, Polish or German...we will see. Maya's DNA should be interesting as she is  mix of many groups: African-American, Native -American, Jewish and then the quarter that came from me: mainly Scottish, Irish, German and that unknown bit.

Rhubarb flowering as it turns out, is a sign of stress. I have to figure out how to harvest it. My kale did not die over the winter.

This has been our week of watching kids: Tuesday Tessa and Maya, last night Tessa and Daniel and tomorrow Allie.

Rhubarb blossom

Everyone lining up to go to the local church garage sale. I got better deals last year

Triple petalled daffodil
tulips
rhubarb flower. These 2 plants are taking over my garden
more tulips
I have 2 males visiting my feeder. Look how orange he is. I have the feeder positioned so I can see them from my bed
in the blossoms
You looking at me? I have about 6 of these crowned sparrows
My flock of blue jays generally feed on the ground but he is trying the suet cake
grape jelly, yum.

I got in line for the big church garage sale. Maybe I am done with these events as I only bought a few things. Then off for a long bike ride before  it became too windy. tonight, we go watch Tessa and Daniel.

Oriole redux

He came back for the grape jelly. Unfortunately the constant rain is diluting the jelly. His mate prefers th orange. Haven't seen her yet this year

Sitting in the service berry tree
Mr. Grosbeak has been visiting us daily for the past week.
The girls doing art
Our lilac blooms have half opened up
New 9x9 tile. It's a trivet which I really don't need but it looks so cool

Spring time brings migrants such as the rose breast grosbeak and the crowned sparrows. About the same time, the orioles appeared last year so I had the feeder ready but they were late in coming. The orioles are not migrants as the nest around here though I've yet to see a nest in person. It is a woven pouch so it should be easy to identify. The oriole even spent time on the suet cake as this particular one contains dried berries. It is also right next to our bedroom so the least bit of movement will spook him unlike the downy woodpecker who ate within a few feet of me while I swept the porch. I could have grabbed him if I wanted too. The chickadees and the hummingbird also come near me. The hummingbird definitely has been visiting the feeders but so far, I took only one poor shot of it.

Yesterday I had the girls for a large part of the day. Shanna had several volunteer jobs and Maya had the day off. Our county had a one issue election that they refused to combine with the primary just 6 weeks ago. Such a waste. The schools are the election places in many precincts (we vote in the church that Naomi was married in). Since the Open Carry law, idiots insist on carrying their assault rifles into the schools while they vote. They decided to keep the kids away and thus the schools are closed for elections.
Other craziness: Some idiot was observed on video tape squirting a mixture of rat poison and hand sanitizer on produce and ready-to-eat food bars at a couple of grocery stores. They caught him at least. Why oh why?

Fortunately it was a beautiful day so the girls could run around outside kicking a soccer ball around while I did lots of gardening. Although I got a lot done, so much more needs work.

Today is stormy though I ran in between the rains. I visited my friend battling host versus graft disease. Nicking her legs while shaving sent her to the hospital for 5 days last week. About 50% of us carry beta strep but we usually can fight it off if it gets in the blood stream. She can not.

Later: much better photo of the oriole

The fox, the Box, and the stand-up teeter-totter

The playground adjacent to their soccer field had the stand-up teeter totter. The girls enjoyed it after the game

Pretty lanterns on porch. I had dreams of entertaining my various guests outside but alas, cold and rain put an end to that
Both the male and female red bellied woodpecker kept coming back. The male entertained the Moms. This is a female. The rose breasted grosbeak came to visit as my work buddy was here. He never saw one before

My early morning run Saturday found me passing a bloated opossum carcass with a turkey vulture dining on it. Usually vultures take flight before I can get 50 feet of them but this one was holding its ground. It spread its wings over the prey to conceal it lest I be tempted to steal the rotting meat beneath it. It hissed. I kept approaching. Finally it ran right in front of me before barely flying off the ground. Its wingspan covered a good percentage of the road. According to the bird book, it is 6 feet. When they are flying overhead, it looks so much smaller but right in front of me, it was obvious. Around here, only the sandhill cranes and eagles have a bigger wingspan.

Sometimes I wish I would have a my 300 mm lens handy while running. About 5 minutes later, two yearling deer stopped dead in their tracks stared me down. Right in front of them was a lone tom turkey. This would have been a cool photo.  I haven't see turkey on this road though  know where there are flocks of them on other roads nearby. The deer are more common. I've seen at least 10 at once in a herd feeding nearby and this was their usual crossing point. The deer scattered but the turkey, like some cartoon character thinking in only one dimension ran in front of me. They are such pretty creatures.

As I was cooling down in front of my house, the former Mrs HOA stopped to tell me from her truck that there was a fox in my backyard along the tree line. She had just seen it. I rushed to get a glimpse but it was gone. The pesky squirrels live in those trees. As I didn't see them for a whole day, I assumed they were fox food but no such luck, one was back the next day. They have to cross a no man's land to reach the feeders risking mainly the red tail hawk who patrols our yard. We have a few spruces that they use as shelters during their dangerous journey.

Initially I thought the HOA lady said there was a box in our yard complaining about trash in our yard that we failed to pick up. I was about to explain that if there were a box, it was from that construction site and its overflowing dumpster but then she went on about the beautiful red fur. I am sensitive because her husband had sent us a letter last year about our yard being non-compliant with the association's standards as Steve had left piles of dead grass from mowing (he has since figured out how not to do that). What a welcome to the neighborhood! But now we have a different board of directors that seem to self nominate as I never been asked to vote and this woman will move shortly. She actually is very nice to me so I should stop whining.

As I was getting a ready to go to Maya's soccer game, I see a hummingbird flitting around where I used to have feeders. Argh I wasn't ready though last year he appeared (males come first) May 2nd. I quickly made some sort of syrup with cold water and made the good stuff to cool down later. I haven't seen him since I put out fresh feeders.

UM graduation was occurring just a mile from her soccer game. Luckily it had started already so the traffic had died down. This time, she actually participated in the game running behind the scrum of girls following the ball instead of standing catatonic sucking her thumb. She actually kicked it a few times, generally in the wrong direction. She was quite proud of herself and smily but is very clueless. Still she has potential as she is very co-ordinated and a fast runner. Her step-sister remains the only useful player on the team. Her grandma was at the game. She is probably 20 years younger than myself.

After the game, the girls played on the new to us, stand-up teeter totter. It is difficult to get on without someone holding it steady, but once on it, they had lots of fun. Then on to shopping. The fancy beer store was next to the field conveniently. My house guest, Rastaman was coming for the night and he appreciates good beer as do I. But when it is cold out, I prefer wine and reserve beer and gin and tonic drinking for the hot nights. Also since I was going to be spending time entertaining and hopefully bicycling, I wasn't going to have a lot of time to make dinner for the Moms the next day so on to Costco for inspiration. Maryland crab cakes! They were sort of pricey but very good. All I would need to do is prepare some sort of sauce, a rice pilaf and a vegetable which I was able to do in less than an hour the next day.

A quick bike ride before the rain started (and has yet to completely end 2 days later) and then Rastaman came. Years ago we shared an office and lab. Small world phenomenon : he had shared a lab with  my brother in Kansas even though one came from MI and the other from PA. We had some beers and then went out to downtown Plymouth (Ann Arbor would have been a zoo with all the graduates and their families) to The Box for dinner and more beer.

I had to cut my long bicycle ride short the next day due to lack of time and that a cold drizzle continually fell. Josh and Allie's usual visit was late and intersected with the Moms' arrival. They hadn't seen Allie since she was a baby though she definitely wanted the Moms to go away and if that wasn't happening, she wanted to go home..NOW! She really doesn't like meeting adults though runs up to strange children eager to engage them.

As usual, the Mom's group was very fun with lots of wine, food and gabbing though as it was a Sunday night, not as long as usual. We had all 5 Moms for a change. This won't happen again for a while because everyone will be off on their own adventures.

Bird land

Male red bellied woodpecker

I love his feathers
A visit from Mr. Rose Breasted grosbeak. Haven't seen him in a year. His ugly mate hasn't been seen yet
Among the service berry blossoms
Later I bought this lamp and two tables

Mrs Red-bellied showed up even later

A good day for new birds though I have heard the red bellied woodpeckers before on our roof, I just never saw them. I do see them on my runs and took distant photos of them a few weeks ago but now, both the male and female came to my feeders today. Early in the morning, the male rose breasted grosbeak came in all his glory. I do have my oriole feeder baited as they came the same time as the grosbeaks last year.

A good friend and I spent a very wonderful afternoon in Northville today. A tasty lunch followed by shopping. In a resale shop, I found these end tables and a walnut pseudo-Frank Lloyd Wright lamp.
